Red State... or the day I realised Kevin Smith wasn't god

I am heartbroken... I feel like the little kid who finds out that Santa was just her dad in a costume with a pillow up his shirt.

I LOVE and adore Kevin Smith and his movies. I am an unrepentant fan girl. I have seen every movie he has made multiple times (well except Cop Out but I made it ALL the way through the one time so that's gotta count for something). I quote characters from the View Askewniverse and worship Jason Mewes and his character Jay. I watch videos of Kevin on youtube, I own his book and I have two signed Silent Bob inaction figures. I have even watched the commentary on all the Jersey films! I EVEN LIKED JERSEY GIRL!

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard that Kevin Smith was making a horror movie (Red State). I read every article I could about it, I checked out the cast, watched other movies they'd been in while I waited for Red State to be made. I was dying to see this amazing new movie, one of my favourite movie makers doing a movie in one of my favourite genres, it was a fan girl's wet dream.

Finally two weeks ago I got my hands on a copy of the film, still unsure if it would have a theatrical release in Australia I surrendered and watched it at home. This is where Kevin Smith broke my heart. The acting was good, the characters were ok, the writing was pretty good, the cinematography probably one of his best, but this WAS NOT A HORROR FILM. After all the build up, the anticipation, the excitement. I felt so let down. I was expecting some sort of Texas Chainsaw Massacre style film, or even Wrong Turn. It wasn't. I don't know what went wrong. I didn't like it. To me it wasn't a horror film, others may disagree but to me it lacked a certain something. It was suspenseful in places, there was violence, there were some funny jokes. Yet despite all this it left me with the empty feeling of disappointment. Maybe I built it up too much in my head, clearly my expectations of the film were incorrect.

I'm hoping this doesn't mean Kevin and I have to break up. I still love him despite this minor hurdle in our relationship, but he's hurt my feelings and its something I won't soon forget.

    Someone made me watch all of this guys films once, including Jersey Girl. Was there a lesbian in it? It was a while ago. I should probably watch it again if there was. It's between Mall Rats & Clerks 2 for me personally. Goodbye, horses!

    Mallrats will always hold a special place in my heart... I also love Dogma! Jay singing in Clerks 2 is definitely one of the best moments of all the films!

I don't want to be that weird, creepy girl

Sometimes I meet people and I know instantly that they are awesome! They laugh at the same things I laugh at, they share similar views to me on things, they are clever, sassy and generally pretty neato (I'm mostly talking about other ladies here), and I think to myself, you're pretty fantastic and I would love to have you as my friend and do stuff with you and hang out and talk about life and love and stupid things we've done. Then comes the kicker. How, as a thirty something grown woman, do you ask another grown woman over for a play date or out for dinner, without seeming like a weirdo / lesbian / desperate / friendless / loser? It's much easier for kids to make new friends, they just say stuff like "I like He-Man and you like He-Man and I think that makes you totally the best and we should be best friends forever until we're like, old and wrinkly and  our butts sag" then they piss themselves laughing and the friendship is cemented.
