favorite super hero and why
growing up I was never really into superheroes. I read comics but it was mostly Archie comics with some occasional British comics that I can't remember the name of. My dad was right into the Phantom but I was never particularly interested, I did however love reading his Asterix books. I vaguely remember watching Superman movies when I was a kid, and have enjoyed the various incarnations of Superman that have appeared on TV.
I became slightly more interested in the world of marvel via some friends when I was in high school and as a "grown up" I've fallen in love with the new breed of superheroes that have graced the silver screen the last few years. I am a little sad at the predominantly male culture associated with the surge in superhero movies and TV shows etc. Don't get me wrong I'm as big a fan of the male superheroes as the next girl (hello Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth & Jeremy Renner!) but where are the strong female role models? (Yes Scarlett Johansson is doing her part but she's still a bit part amongst a collection of men who've all had their own films).
so in terms of superheroes, who does that leave me? it leaves me looking outside of the two big superhero producers, marvel & dc, to a TV show that struck a cord with me in my late teens and twenties, and still resonates with me to this day. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not the ridiculous (but amusing) movie of the same title, but the Joss Whedon created, written, directed, led TV show starring the tiny but kickarse Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Buffy gives girls a strong yet fragile example of a hero that takes the supernatural in her stride but struggles with everyday life. During the seven seasons the show ran for Buffy and her Scooby gang dealt with some crazy way out things, but they also dealt with everyday issues like bullying, sexuality, depression, domestic abuse, death, peer pressure, binge drinking, teen relationships and so much more.
I like my superheroes with some fragility. Some innate humanness. I like superheroes that make us believe that even without super powers we can make a difference in the world. Buffy is everything I want my daughter to be, everything I would like myself to be.
So in conclusion, after all that waffling, Buffy is definitely my favourite superhero!
