Threesome Thursday: Top 3 High School Movies

It's a time in our lives that most of us will never forget, even if we want to. It is that time between leaving our childhoods behind and not quite being adults yet. For some of us it was hell, for some of us it was the best years of our lives, but for all of us it helps define who we are. For this list I didn't just want movies where the kids where of high school age, I wanted movies set in high schools, where high school is the centre of everything that happens in the movie. This meant a lot of otherwise awesome movies didn't make the cut. I surprised myself a little when I'd finished compiling my list and saw that all the movies I'd chosen are from before 1990. I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to.

Here are my picks on the Top 3 High School Movies

While this is a male dominated movie I think us gals can relate to the themes and issues discussed; finding your own identity, establishing your personality away from your parents, making decisions for yourself, standing up for what you believe in even at risk of being ridiculed and ostracised, depression and suicidal thoughts. These are all issues to which the majority of teenagers can relate. We had the movie on VHS when I was growing up and I think I wore the tape out watching it. This was also one of the first movies I ever cried in (the very first being Boyz n the Hood). Here is two of my favourite moments, one from the start when the boys first meet Mr Keating, and what I believe is the final scene of the movie where the boys say good by to their Captain.

2. Lean On Me (1989)
So this movie is more about the Principal but there are definitely issues here we can all relate to. Despite his baddass, take no shit, no compromise, don't back down nature, Mr Clark has nothing but the kids best interests at heart. This is based on a true story and while I'm sure it stretches the truth a little it leaves you feeling inspired.

I love this scene purely for the line Frank says towards the end

3. The Breakfast Club (1985)

This is the quintessential high school movie. With a character representing each of the stereotypes you see in high school and the dynamics and politics between each of them. It is a fantastic representation of what it can be like trying to navigate high school. I've always related to Allison the most in this movie, Ally Sheedy was just so awesome.

This was the best video I could find

Special mention goes to the movie Toy Soldiers. The only reason it didn't make the list is because they kill Wil Wheaton in it and that is just NOT okay. Good film though, you should check it out.

Which one of the characters from the Breakfast Club do you most relate to? Would you have stood on your desk to honour Mr Keating? What are your favourite movies set in high school?

World Domination and the Darkness

"Gee Brain, what do you want to do tonight?" "The same thing we do every night Pinky -  try to take over the world!" Two things are clear to me , I love that cartoon and Brain never suffered from depression. You see it's much easier to try to take over the world if you don't have to use every ounce of motivation and determination in your body to get out of bed each morning. If Brain had suffered from depression it is likely he may have given up his plan after the first failure. For even the smallest hurdle can, to a depressive, seem like an insurmountable barrier. Now don't get me wrong, there are lots of depressed people who have achieved all sorts of amazing things. World domination while depressed is not completely impossible its just a hell of a lot harder. Before people start accusing me of being a whiner and making excuses I would first ask those people a) do you currently have or have you ever depression? and b) can you shut your stupid...

I don't want to be that weird, creepy girl

Sometimes I meet people and I know instantly that they are awesome! They laugh at the same things I laugh at, they share similar views to me on things, they are clever, sassy and generally pretty neato (I'm mostly talking about other ladies here), and I think to myself, you're pretty fantastic and I would love to have you as my friend and do stuff with you and hang out and talk about life and love and stupid things we've done. Then comes the kicker. How, as a thirty something grown woman, do you ask another grown woman over for a play date or out for dinner, without seeming like a weirdo / lesbian / desperate / friendless / loser? It's much easier for kids to make new friends, they just say stuff like "I like He-Man and you like He-Man and I think that makes you totally the best and we should be best friends forever until we're like, old and wrinkly and  our butts sag" then they piss themselves laughing and the friendship is cemented. But that just doesn...

now you're just somebody that i used to know

this song by gotye (good thing this is typed or i'd still be stumbling over the pronunciation... goat-ee-ay... gotcha...goat-yee...) is one of my favourites at the moment and is on constant rotation at my house and in my car. the song is about two ex lovers but has gotten me thinking about all those people that were once an intrinsic part of my life, helped me to define who i was and my place in the world and are now just some people that i used to know. we all have them. those people that we thought we would be friends with forever, that we talked to every day, hung out with all the time, people who knew all our in jokes because they helped create them, knew all the stories of our past. then suddenly you wake up one day and realise its been a month since you saw them, then its six months, then you can't remember the last time you saw them. you think about calling them but it feels awkward, then you tell yourself that they could call you if they wanted to. time passes and the...
