It's always so hard to pick just a handful of films from the Revelation Perth International Film Festival (or Rev as it's affectionately known) lineup to recommend. When people ask me what they should see my answer is usually "ALL THE THINGS!". But I'm going to do my darnedest to pick out the best of the best. I'm going to split it into three different categories, my top 5 features, my top 5 documentaries and my overall top 5. Anything that makes it into the overall top 5 won't be included in the other two because that would be silly.
Top 5 Features
- White Reindeer
- A Field in England
- Gimme the Loot
- Cheap Thrills
- A Monster in Paris (A kids movie and showing in 3D!)
Check out the trailer for the not-your-average-Christmas-movie White Reindeer here
Top 5 Documentaries
The trailer for The Act of Killing is here. It's chilling stuff.
and now, DRUMROLL...
Top 5 Overall
- Goblin Plays Suspiria (this live performance event is going to blow your mind!)
- I Am Divine
- Pictures of Superheroes
- The Final Member
- The Deep (Djupio)
Here is the trailer for I Am Divine, is she gonna fuck you or eat you?
Out of all these films, I Am Divine and The Final Member are to me the epitome of what Rev is about. Not only because of their content but for what their content has to say. Divine was about pushing boundaries, about doing what no one else was doing. She showed people that it was ok to be different, to be a freak, that there was a place for everyone no matter how weird they were. Then in The Final Member we are introduced to Sigurdur Hjartarson, the founder of the Icelandic Phallological Museum, who explains how important it is to him to make people talk about the things they don't want to talk about, to confront issues they would rather ignore. These combined sentiments are what Rev is to me and why I love it so much.
So get yourself down to Luna, Paradiso or SX and laugh, cry, gasp, be shocked, expand your mind, and most importantly of all, be a little bit changed forever.
Rev runs July 4- 14 and all the details can be found on their site http://revelationfilmfest.org/
